- Original Area HomeI am interested in any history of the area and / or our home that anyone can offer. Here is the story of our home as it has been told to us....please keep in mind we really have nothing but great stories to go on, so if you can add to or correct any of this information, we'd love to hear from you.
396 Elwood Lane is an arts & crafts bungalow that was built in 1930 for the Kent family. In 1931 Mrs. Kent had 386 Elwood Lane (corner of Elwood & Lynbar) built for her daughter, who married Mr. Elwood. Our street was their back driveway at the time.
There was no Mendenhall, and much of what was here was pecan grove. When Mendenhall came to be, along with a lot of the newer homes, these two houses now faced 'backwards.' I also understand that these are two of the only basements in the area. Ours stays quite dry, although I'd call it more of a root cellar really.
In the late 70's the home was purchased by the Bailey family. They put an addition on the home on the 'back,' eliminating the old front door and adding a partial 2nd story. We bought the house from them in the summer of 2004, making us only the 3rd owners in 77 years! I find that truly amazing.
We love the bungalow style and are working hard to fix her up in a way that at least reflects that style. It is very slow going due to our work schedules, but we are making a little progress......one day at a time!
Thanks, and please let's hear from other folks in the area. I know there are some really neat stories out there! I think it would be really fun to map the neighborhood based upon when houses were built.
